Classification of Marble Tiles

Marble tiles are mostly composed of serpentine, dolomite and calcite. These rocks are able to exhibit a gloss or sheen when properly prepared. Hence, marble tiles are often characterized by their finish. They may either be tumbled, honed or polished.

Tumbled marble tiles often have a matte finish but looks rather worn and rustic. This is why tumbled tiles, with their time-ravaged and eroded appearance, are also known as antiques. With regards to honed marble, this refers to marble tiles that are smooth and matte in appearance. On the other hand, polished marble tiles have glossy, reflective surfaces.

There are also Rosette marble tiles, which are already adorned with stylized patterns. In contrast to rosettes, marble tiles used for mosaics are cut small and are used to create a much larger artistic design. Rosettes and mosaic marble tiles may be tumbled, honed or polished.

Finally, marble tiles may be categorized as natural stone marble or cultured marble. The latter is also called artificial or reconstituted marble. Cultured marble are mostly made of marble dust from industrial or commercial use of natural stone marble; reconstituted using resins or cement and given a faux marbling finish. Natural stone marble is characteristically more desirable and thus more costly than cultured marble.
