Among the many different kinds of stone building materials, marbles are the most sought after. Because of this, marble tiles are among the most expensive variety. Not only are marbles considered long-lasting, it also adds a regal atmosphere and refinement when used to adorn buildings and homes. It was a status symbol for the ancient Greek societies and remains a benchmark of affluence to this day.
Marbles are metamorphisms of different sedimentary rocks such as limestone and dolomite. They come in a number of varieties, differentiated mostly by color and location. Marbles will typically have a dominant color but will contain swirling veins of various colorations. These characteristic veinous markings originate from mineral impurities present in the limestone and were subsequently incorporated in the metamorphic process.
If the marble is of a solid color with minimal traces of veins, this would mean that its source limestone was quite pure and free from other mineral impurities. In this sense, pure limestone will give rise to a pure white marble. Such white marbles are used primarily on sculptures and are considered very expensive.
